On April 15, 2007 Freedom Quilts honored these three soldiers by inviting the soldiers'
families to Varina Iowa to receive a quilt.
Betty is introducing the ladies who helped make these quilts
Sgt. Nathan R. Field's mother Mary, shares her beloved son with us so we could understand better
this wonderful man she called her son.
Sgt Casey Byers and Spc Justin "Paul" Byers mother Ann, also shared her two sons with the rest of us. She
told us she had received more support from strangers and just how much that meant to her. Ann
talked about how her quilt will be passed on from generation to generation
Some day Hailey, Casey's daughter, will talk to her children or grandchildren about
her father and uncle and the goodness of caring and how her quilt came about.
Betty and Wilmar Pollema previous recipients, place a few stitches in a quilt
They also shared with those gathered what it meant to them to see their Freedom Quilt for the first
time and relate how the quilt has helped them grieve for their son, SSgt Bruce J. Pollema
Stitches are being tied in a quilt that will be given to a fallen soldiers family
